"Pinot Grigio" is the Italian name for the French "Pinot Gris" grape, a mutation of the exquisite and very exclusive Pinot Noir.
Unlike Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio is often associated with a more "democratic" style, which explain why it is currently one of the most popular white wine grapes in the world. It has spread pretty much everywhere from (obviously) France and Italy, to California and Oregon, Australia and New Zealand.
In the hands of good producers the wines can achieve great distinction, but most often Pinot Grigio is synonymous with refreshing and light wines, aromatic and versatile enough to accompany delicately flavored dishes or just by themselves on a hot summer day by the pool.
All over Portugal there are white wines made to be drunk young, produced on purpose to exhibit appealing fruit and balanced acidity, for a relaxed and casual consumption.
Food Pairing
White meats and seafood, especially when paired with fruits such as lemons, oranges, peaches, or apricots, are a perfect match for Pinot Grigio. Try the wines below with snails (a VERY popular dish in Portugal during the summer), cod carpaccio, sushi and sashimi, grilled calamari, the very popular Bacalhau à Brás, or even a healthy version of vegetable and ricotta pizza. Fish tacos and fried fish are also a match made in heaven.
